Babies
and Books
Enjoying books with your baby
or toddler can be one of the most satisfying experiences
you share. Your child will treasure the opportunity to
snuggle, talk together and play, and you will find your
time reading together, a fun and relaxing
moment in your busy day.
So when should you start? Infancy is NOT too young, because
listening is so important to the development of language.
Books serve as models of language, and introduce a wide
variety of different words and sounds. Babies love the
noises, chanting, rhymes and song found in early books.
When you read aloud to your infant, they discover that
books have words and pictures, stories have a sequence,
language is made up of different sounds, and that words
and pictures have meaning. It all starts so early!
When picking out a books for
your child, look for books that involve the child through
language or touch. Pictures should be clear and colorful.
Look for books where the words flow rhythmically and there
is repetition. Remember to make time and have fun!
